Anybody out there have a remedy for a clogged eustachian tube? It's been 2
weeks now, and is slowly driving me nuts. Been to the doctor..have tried
prednazone (sp?), several nasal sprays, sudafed, prayer, etc. Not a good
part of the church year to experience with this malady.

I'm using Otozone for this very thing now. It's an antibiotic ear drop but
after 6 days of use, I have seen no improvement. I'm about to get desparate
enough to see an ENT. I take a daily antihistamine/decongestant + 2 nasal
sprays.
BTW, the internist said mine was related to the stomach virus I had last
week.

I think if you can clear some of the nasal passages you might equalize the
pressure and allow any drainage to take place from the Eustachian tube. Have you
tried using a product called Alkalol full strength, as a nasal douche. It
will loosen any mucus. Then just keep blowing your nose, until both nostrils are
clear. Take the Alkalol by closing the opposite nostril and holding your head
back slightly. This could be done before sleep and during the day.

It is also a wonderful gargle. I learned about it doing a number of Broadway
shows, where vocal problems abound because of the close company backstage.
Also a most soothing spray recommended by my ENT, Entsol spray. It is
preservative free and drug free. It is a buffered spray so it will not irritate the nasal
passage.

I use saline spray w/o preservatives on a regular basis to keep my nose clean
and I recommend this technique to my students to keep the passages clean and
hydrated.

This is an old family remedy which has helped sometimes in our family:

Drink a glass of warm water while holding your nose.

It doesn't seem to hurt anything and may help clear things out.

Also, in our family, we all sing and we all have allergies. We also use a
lot of nasal saline, both to help keep the nasal passages hydrated and as a
douche. My allergist recommended this to me for years before I finally took
his advice and tried it.

Actually, it sounds to me like you may be past this kind of help.

Anybody every heard of the Valsalva maneuver? They use it on planes to
unclog tubes, though if they are that clogged I don't know if it would
work. Hold your nose and blow till the tubes clear. You have to blow
harder than you think, and it's a bit scary the first time.

Also Neti, which is a yoga version of the saline thing. Sip the salt
water through your nose, gently, till it runs down the back of your
throat. Do this three times in a nostril, then blow the nose. Then do
the other nostril. Three times a day. There is a special pot for
this, but I just use a shot glass. I make saline at about 1/4 tsp per
half cup, and warm it in the microwave till it's just lukewarm, so the
salt can dissolve and it's comfortable to do. Sounds gross, but really
clears nostrils and tissue in the head.

Dean, Stuff I have tried that has worked for head congestion of various
kinds:

Hold hot water in your mouth, as hot as you can stand it, for as long as
you can stand it.

Hot compresses.

Absolutely lethally hot chili or curry.

Hey Dean,
Will speak with my hubby, the ENT doc, at dindin tonight. Are you sure it's a
blockage? I've had terrible ear wax problems the last few Advents and
Christmases. Thought it was some sort of blockage & my own "Dr. Wonderful"
cleaned out my ears and all was right with the world. Will get back to you
later. Off to church right now to confer with my new organist.
